ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE, HISTORIC STREETCARS

Saturday June 12, 2010

$114

Meadowcroft Rockshelter, an archaeological site near Avella in southwestern Pennsylvania, is a rock shelter in a bluff over looking a tributary of the Ohio River. Excavated from 1973 - 1978, radiocarbon dating dates the site back 16,000 - 19,000 years. It has yielded Woodland, Archaic and Paleoindian remains. Along with this site, they have re-created a 17th century Native American Village. We will be transported up to the site and then completing the journey along their newly-constructed observation deck - staircase - enclosure to get a first-hand view and to learn more about this fascinating archaeological discovery.

We’ll be dining at The Spring House, an old-fashioned country store and restaurant specializing in made-from-scratch meals and pies. Then it’s off to see the “Streetcar Named Desire”, along with thirty trolleys from Cleveland, Pittsburgh and other cities. The museum highlights the “trolley era” and, while we are here, we’ll be traveling about four miles aboard a beautifully-restored streetcar before departing for a candy store - ice cream soda shop.
